DAVANAGERE: Hundreds of farmers blocked national highway (NH-4) near Shamanur here on Thursday, protesting against the district administration for the delay in purchasing their maize. Because of the road blockade, the traffic came to a halt for over 30 minutes.
The farmers were upset with the district administration for not making arrangements to load/ unload maize to/ from over 150 trucks at its gowdowns in the last three days. They expressed their anguish by staging protests near Laxmi Floor Mill and on NH-4. The rain on Wednesday evening, which made the grain sacks wet, added to their problems. The authorities of the district administration later made arrangements to weigh the stock and store it in godowns.
